The UBC Faculty of Education invites applications for the position of Head, Department of Language and Literacy Education. We are seeking individuals with an international reputation and a strong record of research or educational leadership in Language and Literacy Education or related fields, and with effective academic leadership and successful administrative experience, especially in strategic planning including academic programs (online, face-to-face, and hybrid), graduate student recruitment and support, budgets and human resources (HR), along with team-building, collaborative engagements, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
The successful candidate will be offered two concurrent appointments – an ongoing academic appointment at the rank of Professor or Professor of Teaching with tenure, and a 5-year term administrative appointment as Head. Both appointments are expected to start July 1, 2023 or a date agreed upon by the University and the successful applicant.
The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate the following characteristics:
- An exemplary track record of enacting equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, anti-racism, and social justice
- A good understanding of budgets in a post-secondary institution context and experience dealing
- responsibly with budget issues

The academic appointment (rank and tenure) is subject to a positive review of the successful candidate’s record of achievements following the University’s established processes. The Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED) is a community of educators committed to social justice in our work with students, colleagues, partners, and community members. We currently have 32 tenure stream faculty members, about 80 term faculty and 7 staff members. LLED offers Master of Education, Master of Arts, and PhD degrees in the areas of Literacy Education, TESL, and Modern Language Education. We also offer undergraduate courses for the Teacher Education Program, Literacy Education Diploma, Teacher Librarian Certificate and Diploma, TESL Certificate and Diploma, and other programs.

Psychological Services and Counselling Training Centre (PSCTC) Director, UBC

This person serves as the administrative director of the Psychological Services and Counselling Training Centre (PSCTC), in the Department of Educational and Counselling and Psychology, and Special Education, Faculty of Education, UBC, serving in administrative, clinical, supervision and/or teaching roles.
The PSCTC Director works under the overall direction of the Department Head, and works closely with the Coordinators of Counselling Clinics and School and Applied Child Psychology Clinics, as well as other clinical faculty in the department. Directly supervises graduate students who work as Graduate Academic Assistants in the centre. Serves as a liaison with psychologists in the community who serve as assessment and practicum supervisors, as well as other Lower Mainland programs involved in clinical training. In general, is actively participating in and contributing to the development and delivery of effective and efficient psychological services and training activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Counselling Psychology or a related field. Eligible for certification as a Registered Psychologist in British Columbia. Minimum of seven years of experience in clinical counselling plus experience supervising Doctoral level practicum students.

The Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS) in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position as part of our CPA-accredited Counselling Psychology (CNPS) program. We seek a strong researcher in any area within Counseling Psychology. The desired start date is July 1, 2023, or as negotiated with the successful candidate.
Applicants must hold a doctorate degree in Counselling Psychology or a closely related discipline within psychology. The Department of ECPS (ecps.educ.ubc.ca) is the largest of the five academic units in the UBC Faculty of Education and has 44 tenure stream faculty members across five program areas, including Counselling Psychology; Human Development, Learning, and Culture; School and Applied Child Psychology; Special Education; and Measurement, Evaluation and Research Methodology. Over 400 graduate students, including 140 PhD students, are currently enrolled in the Department. The Department has strong ties to schools, community, and governmental agencies, the Faculty of Education’s Psychoeducational Research and Training Centre, and other units across campus and in the community.

The Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor position in Art Education in the Department of Curriculum & Pedagogy (EDCP). The Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS) in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor position in School and Applied Child Psychology (SACP). The appointment is expected to commence July 1, 2023 (or as negotiated with the successful candidate).
The SACP program is one of only four accredited doctoral programs in school psychology in Canada offering M.Ed. (no thesis), M.A. (thesis) and Ph.D. degrees. The SACP program is focused on school and community systems, and continues to build a focus on social justice as well as a commitment to Indigenous communities. The successful applicant will maintain a 12-credit annual workload which includes teaching at the undergraduate, masters, and/or doctoral levels.
Applicants for this position must have a doctoral degree in applied psychology (school, counseling, or clinical, preferably from a CPA/APA or other nationally accredited program or research university) or a closely related field. Preference will be given for candidates who are also Registered Psychologists, or eligible for registration in British Columbia.
Candidates should demonstrate a promising (Assistant Professor) or established (Associate Professor) record of scholarly accomplishments and teaching in the areas of academic assessment and/or intervention. A demonstrated commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and clinical supervision is important. In addition to experience with service delivery to a diverse population of children and youth (as well as their families, schools, and communities), research, teaching and supervisory experiences in one or more of the following areas is preferred: social, emotional, and/or behavioral assessment and interventions; cultural and linguistic diversity; consultation; school-based mental health and wellness. We particularly welcome applicants who have a demonstrated or emerging program of research that complements and provides new expertise within the SACP program and ECPS department.

The minimum qualification for this position is a doctoral degree in a field directly relevant to Social Studies Education. The Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS) in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for an open rank Educational Leadership stream faculty position as tenure-track Assistant Professor of Teaching, tenured Associate Professor of Teaching, or tenured Professor of Teaching in School and Applied Child Psychology (SACP). The SACP program is one of only four accredited doctoral programs in school psychology in Canada offering M.Ed. (no thesis), M.A. (thesis) and Ph.D. degrees. The SACP program is focused on school and community systems, and continues to build a focus on social justice as well as a commitment to Indigenous communities. The successful applicant will maintain a 24-credit annual workload which includes teaching at the undergraduate, masters, and/ or doctoral levels, and significant educational leadership responsibilities, such as curriculum development, evaluation, innovation, course/program coordination, graduate teaching assistant supervision, and other leadership roles.
Applicants for this position must have a doctoral degree in applied psychology (school, counseling, or clinical, preferably from a CPA/APA or other nationally accredited program or research university) or a closely related field. Preference will be given for candidates who are also Registered Psychologist, credentialed through the British Columbia Association of School Psychologists (BCASP), or eligible for registration as a psychologist (or in a related helping profession) in British Columbia or BCASP.

Experience with developing, teaching, and monitoring early childhood certificate programs, including post-secondary online teaching and learning, is required. - Statistics and Data Science: Causal inference, computational statistics and latent variable and hierarchical modelling, Bayesian statistics.
- Assessment, Measurement and Psychometrics: Assessment design, validity, fairness and psychometric modelling.
Dr. Zumbo has a long-standing role in developing psychometric and statistical methodology for testing and assessment, such as invariance in item response theory (IRT), differential item functioning (DIF), validity theory, and the statistical methods widely used in large-scale testing, assessment, and survey programs.
Current research in this area focuses on theoretically based development or enhancement of statistical and psychometric methods for analyzing item and test data, using mathematical theory to support these statistical and psychometric methods, and applying existing methods to novel problems. There is a particular interest in developing methods for causal inference and Bayesian methods related to measurement invariance and DIF.
Qualifications:
Candidates should hold, or expect to hold by the time of appointment, a doctoral degree for no more than two years since being awarded the doctoral degree in psychometrics, educational measurement, statistics, or a related discipline by the time of appointment.
The candidate will demonstrate strong research knowledge, skills and attitudes; a demonstrated research interest in Statistics and Data Science and Assessment, Measurement and Psychometrics as described above. They should also demonstrate an understanding of Dr. Zumbo’s research program.
Graduate training in the mathematical sciences would be considered an asset.

The Curriculum and Evaluation Consultant provides academic, curricular and instructional designing services, and leadership in the implementation, analysis, and dissemination of evaluation for academic or non-academic learning initiatives in the Faculty of Education The position works to build innovative and effective strategies in support of evaluating learning and teaching initiatives, new tools and technologies. It works in close collaboration with faculty and may manages Graduate Academic Assistants (GAAs).
The Educational Technology Support (ETS) unit offers educational services to advance scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching, learning, curriculum and educational technology practices. The Curriculum and Evaluation Consultant reports to the Director, Learning Design. The selected candidate will work closely and collaboratively with academic and administrative units throughout Faculty of Education, with the faculty and staff members, sessional instructors, external clients, development teams and other departments and agencies on and off the UBC campus.
Work Performed
- Responsible for the planning, development, and assessment of effectiveness of course design on the success of educational programs in a large program area, such as Diploma, Certificate, Master or PhD Degree cohorts of special projects;
- Conducts needs assessments and develops corresponding strategies for improvement or modification of the programs design, ensuring alignment of the unit services, and Faculty of Education, and UBC strategic goals;
- Conducts instructional design research and analyses and provides curriculum and course design consultation, research and analysis;
- Ensures evaluation services meet requirements through implementation of partners’ needs;
- Initiates research projects related to the design and efficacy of blended and distributed learning materials and methods within the various programs supported;
- Takes a leadership role in curriculum and evaluation processes, liaises with faculty representatives, and participates in strategic decision-making regarding evaluation of programs and initiatives and the use of learning analytics;
- In consultation with academic project leads, designs and implements evaluation plans for teaching and learning projects, providing guidance and recommendations for re-designs of existing programs to better meet educational goals;
- Provides curriculum and evaluation consultations for grant projects with Edith Lando Virtual Centre and recommendation of strategies;
- Collaborates with other Faculties at UBC or other universities in the development of pedagogical and assessment tools for the design and delivery of educational programs;
- Identifies interrelations and synergies in evaluation activities across projects and develops tools and processes to synthesize evaluation and research outcomes to inform department, faculty and unit decision making;
- Prepares summary reports, and makes long-range recommendations for research and evaluation related software;
- Responsible for developing evaluation frameworks and strategies, documenting processes, standards and best practices;
- Curates and manages repositories of evaluation and research tools, materials and outputs;
- Responsible for evaluation and budget of special grant projects and may assists in developing marketing plans for those program areas;
- In collaboration with the Director, Learning Design, recruits required specialists and experts for grant projects and programs. Provides direction and evaluation of their work;
- Regularly evaluates quality of unit’s services and provides recommendations for continuous improvement of processes;
- Using evidence-informed approach, designs and implements impact evaluation activities for ETS’ services;
- Develops policies, systems and organizational practices;
- Consults with internal and external partners;
- Completes work in compliance with university policies, best practices and ethics regulations;
- Disseminates work at local, national and international conferences and collaborates with faculty and colleagues on publications. May represent ETS interests by serving on UBC committees or provincial, national and international organizations;

Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Education. Minimum of six years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD preferred. Experience working in a post-secondary institution with an understanding of the academic University environment and of UBC policies and procedures. Proven team and project management skills with ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure with fast changing priorities, uncertainty or ambiguity. Deep understanding of evaluation and research design, models, methods and methodologies utilized in Higher Education and learning analytics. Knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative approaches to evaluation and research.
Strong oral and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to address difficult situations with diplomacy, tact, patience and discretion. Ability to guide parties with differing opinions to consensus. Exercises initiative and sound judgment in making decisions. Ability to reflect, focus beyond individual project needs, and update course of action as necessary.
Ability to coordinate a number of projects concurrently with a high degree to accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to take initiative and to work with limited direction, both independently and in a team environment.
